In the days when The Brighton and Hove Competitive Music Festival was held at the Dome you could see her at the grand piano on the stage playing for all the Doris Isaacs pupils. Many of the dances she choreographed herself. The character dances are particularly memorable. Juliet, Hamlet, Ophelia, Joan of Arc, and Peter Pan to name but a few.

Ethel was also an authority on Classical Greek dance and the classes she gave were an education into the beauty, strength building and expression of the Greek discipline.

In her youth Ethel was a talented and versatile dancer herself, at one time performing a double act on stage between cinema showings. She also opened her own school of dancing in Queens Road in Brighton.

For forty years until her retirement she was pianist and teacher at the Doris Isaacs school, part of the team with Doris Isaacs and Rosemary Carden producing shows, solo dances and many successful students. One, now famous, young man decided that there should be more floor space in the studio and dismantled Mrs. Bakers music shelves! This met with horror and disbelief that anyone should ‘touch’ her music. I think he was forgiven eventually.

  • My most enduring memory of Ethel Baker is of her seated at the piano in the studios of The Doris Isaacs School of Dancing playing for classes. She was an amazing pianist who could make class music inspirational and a joy to dance to. The classical piano recitals she performed were also superb. I myself learnt a huge amount from a most generous, kind and multitalented lady. It was a great privilege to have known her.

  • MRS BAKER was not only a gifted teacher specialising in classical greek, but she was also a lovely pianist. Her musicality shone through her playing and teaching. However I remember her as one of the kindest and most caring people I knew as a child growing up and I have many happy memories of her calling me a little sausage !
